About the lab

I'm Johnattan García-Ruiz. I work on health systems in Latin America and the Caribbean, and this lab is where I play with AI.

The day job

I founded Decilion, a global health consultancy that works across the 33 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. We do research and advice for international agencies, universities and NGOs on how health systems work: who gets medicines, how regulators decide, how systems change over time. I also lead our data visualisation work.

I trained as a lawyer in Colombia, then studied public health at Harvard and business at Oxford. I have been a consultant to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre, ACCESS Health International and Oxfam, and a senior researcher at Harvard's Health Systems Innovation Lab.

Teaching

I lecture at the Universidad de los Andes School of Law and the Universidad del Rosario School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Bogotá, and I run hands-on workshops on generative AI for people in global health. I'm also a Department Associate in the Department of Global Health and Population at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Why a lab

Most of these projects start the same way. I have a problem, and what's out there is not good enough, too expensive or simply doesn't exist, so I build something with AI. Some come from my work, others from everyday life, and a few from plain curiosity. For each one I share the problem, what I built, the models, tools and services I used, the results, and what I learned for the next one.

Got an idea?

If you have a dataset, a tool or a question you think AI could help with, I'd love to hear about it.
